If you are on the hunt for the most energy efficient windows on the market, then triple glazing will be the perfect solution for you.
Triple glazing uses the same modern technology as double glazing, though has three panes of glass and an extra pocket of trapped gas. This enhances your windows’ insulative properties even further and makes it harder for sound waves to travel into your home.
At M Powell, we are proud to be at the forefront of innovation in our industry and that we’re able to provide high-tech products that you can bring into your home, such as triple glazing. The extra pane of glass helps to maintain the heat in your property by keeping the cold temperatures outside, enabling you to save even more on your household bills.
Triple glazing is commonly used in colder parts of the world, such as Norway and Sweden, due to its excellent ability to preserve heat. By installing triple glazing in your home, you will add value to your property as well as create a quiet, peaceful and cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle and cooler temperatures outside. Choose from a variety of different window frame materials and finishes, so you can make your home both thermally efficient and visually pleasing.

Does triple glazing make a difference?
Due to the extra pane of glass and the additional pocket of gas, triple glazing is even more insulative than single or double glazing. To help us get our point across, we can look at the U-value of different materials. The U-value indicates how much heat is lost; the lower the U-value, the better insulation it provides. A brick wall has a U-value of 2.0, a double glazed window is around 1.2 and triple glazing is half that at 0.6. This means that you will significantly save on your energy bills as the heat inside your home will be retained and the cold air kept outside. However, if you live in a period property that is prone to unwelcome draughts, you might want to address and fix those issues before you install your triple glazing as this can reduce its efficiency.
Is it worth replacing double glazing for triple glazing?
It depends if you’re looking to take that extra step towards insulating your home. Naturally, triple glazing is more energy efficient and is commonly used in Scandinavian countries where the winters are a lot colder than those we experience here in the UK.
Making the switch from double to triple glazing is probably most worth it if you’re double glazing is already in need of an upgrade. If you live in the countryside and experience significant drops in temperature during the winter nights, then triple glazing is the better window solution for you. Though if you have relatively new double glazing and live in a city, you might not see the return on your investment in triple glazing as quickly. Either way, triple glazing is a great investment, adding value to your home and reducing your household bills for decades to come.
How long does triple glazing last?
It depends on a number of variables, such as the weather, the area you live in and how well you maintain your windows. All our triple glazed windows come with a 10 year guarantee, but if you clean them regularly they will last a lot longer. All that is required in terms of their maintenance is to wipe them down with a clean cloth and hoover away any dirt or debris from the frames. A general rule is that they are likely to last for around 20 years and sometimes as long as 35 with only slight degradation of their insulative properties.
What is the difference between double and triple glazing?
They both use the same technology, though triple glazing is made using three panes of glass and two pockets of gas, adding to their insulative capabilities. We use argon to fill the pockets between the panes of glass, which is a gas denser than air. The extra pocket of gas used to separate the three panes of glass used in triple glazing, makes it even harder for sound waves to travel into your home but also for the cold temperatures outside to creep in. Triple glazing is also better at retaining the heat inside your home, so you will notice a significant reduction in your energy bills during the winter months. Triple glazing is thicker than double glazing, so it’s up to you if you would prefer thinner glass units or thicker, more insulating ones.
