Are uPVC sash windows any good?
Highly versatile, UPVC is a material well known for its durability and is one of our most cost-effective window solutions that does not compromise on quality. Although not famed for its good looks, modern uPVC can now easily replicate the traditional aesthetic of a sash window. When done correctly, a uPVC sash window can look almost identical to a classic freshly-painted wooden one but without the upkeep! UPVC sash windows are easy to clean and unlike wooden frames, they don’t require an extra lick of paint to maintain that ‘new’ feeling.
How do you measure a sash window?
Width – measure from one side of the sash window to the other side within the box frame, excluding the width of the box that the window sits in.
Height – include both sashes when you measure from the top of the window to the bottom.
Measure inside the box frame for an accurate measurement of the sash windows themselves.
Box frame height – measure the top of your window frame all the way down to the windowsill.
Box frame width – this includes the entire window frame.
Are uPVC or aluminium windows better?
It depends what you’re looking for! UPVC is a highly insulative material and well known for its durability. UPVC requires minimal upkeep and is our most cost-effective option.
On the other hand, you will have to dig deeper into your pockets to install aluminium sash windows. It is an incredibly robust material and is stronger than uPVC, meaning it can be used for smaller window frames and sashes, resulting in a larger glass surface area. This maximises on light streaming into your home and provides unobstructed views of your beautiful surroundings.
Can sash windows be double glazed?
Absolutely! Upgrade your old windows to double or triple glazing. Highly energy efficient, they will help to reduce your household bills by keeping your home well insulated all year round. Double and triple glazing are created using layers of glass that trap gas between them, stopping heat transfer between the panes.
UPVC sash windows won’t break the bank (they are one of the cheapest options out there) meaning you can install double-glazed sash windows for an affordable price. They can also ben modified to come in a wood grain finish so that you’ll get all of the traditional charm of a wooden sash window but for a cheaper price!
How does a window sash work?
Manufactured using two or more panels, a sash window functions by having at least one panel that moves up or down. Depending on your personal preference, you can choose to have your sash window single or double-hung. Single-hung means that just one panel moves vertically up or down, although if you want to increase the ventilation in your home then a double-hung sash window lets both the top and bottom panels move.
When you slide open a sash window, the glass panel remains in the same place and does not slide back down into the casing. This is due to its pulley system. The window is at the end of the cord whilst a counterweight is at the other. This ensures your sash window doesn’t shut on itself when you let go.
Which part of the window is the sash?
The sash is the section of the window that holds the glass panes together when it sits within the window frame. If you choose a single-hung window only one sash moves vertically up and down, whereas if you opt for a double-hung window two sashes will move.
It is important to ensure a window sash is properly installed and maintained, otherwise the window may warp over time. Not only does this damage its aesthetic appeal, but the window also becomes less resistant to the weather and can leak and let unwelcome draughts into your home. This reduces the insulative properties of your sash window.
