An orangery is a stylish and elegant design that will complement any home, adding a touch of class and glamour to your property. Historically, orangeries were commonly used as an outhouse used to grow exotic shrubs and trees and were a symbol of wealth.
Today, an orangery is a sophisticated extension to your home and an enjoyable, multifunctional living space for the whole family to benefit from. Available for almost every budget, an orangery has similar advantages to a conservatory but has more of a solid structure. It’s created with dwarf walls running around the edge of the orangery and the edges of the roof are also solid. Like a traditional Victorian conservatory design, an orangery will maximise the amount of light entering your additional inside space and will be warmed by the sun.
Incredibly luxurious, an orangery will add value to your home due to the extra living space created, whilst enhancing your property’s visual appeal. Less expensive than a traditional extension but extremely durable, an orangery will be an integral part of your home for years to come.
Our patented designs enable us to provide you with the orangery of your dreams. Whatever style you choose, you will be able to create both a beautiful and practical living area for you and your household to enjoy in every season. What is an orangery?
Similar to a conservatory, an orangery is an extension to your existing property but has more brickwork and therefore is more of a solid structure. Traditionally, an orangery has dwarf walls and pillars running around the sides and the roof is also solid with either a lantern roof or Glass Pods installed. The rest of the walls and the central part of the ceiling are still made from glass, increasing the amount of light entering your inside space.
Historically, orangeries were practical buildings for Northern Europeans to grow oranges, lemons and lime trees when their climate didn’t allow it. They become a symbol of glamour and high class and are still incredibly stylish and luxurious to this day. Now, however, they are used as a type of conservatory and a way to add additional space to your property.
What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
Generally, a conservatory is constructed using more glass than an orangery and allows more light to enter through the glass ceiling, doors and windows. On the other hand, an orangery uses dwarf walls and pillars and lets in slightly less light due to having more of a solid structure using materials such as brick or stone. This means that an orangery gets less hot than a conservatory during the summer months and is more insulative. An orangery is a comfortable living space to be enjoyed in every season, no matter what the temperature is outside, and functions more like an extension than a conservatory.
A conservatory brings you closer to nature and creates a seamless transition from your inside space and your garden. Depending on your personal preference, it’s down to you to decide which design better suits you and your lifestyle!
Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?
An orangery is constructed using more solid parts and less glass than a conservatory, so is generally warmer as it better retains the heat. This does depend, however, on the quality of the materials used. For example, a conservatory made with double glazed A+ rated glass would be more insulative than an orangery made from single glazing. At M Powell, all our products are made with high-performance double glazing and high-quality materials, so that we ensure your home is as well insulated as possible so you can save money on your energy bills.
Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?
You will have to dig deeper into your back pocket to install an orangery, but it is a more affordable investment than a full extension. If you are looking to create an additional space that allows more light to enter into your living area, then an orangery would be the better option. Incorporating a lot of glass into its structure, an orangery maximises on the amount of light entering your property even though it incorporates brick and stone into its structure as well.
An orangery will add a touch of class and glamour to your home, enhancing its visual appeal and is a great step up from a traditional conservatory design. If you would like to find out how much an orangery would cost, get in contact with an advisor today for a free, no obligation quote.
