Are French doors always double?
French doors’ definable characteristic is that their design consists of two doors within the same frame, as opposed to two separate doors in two individual frames. This means that when your French doors are fully open, they create unobstructed views of your stunning surroundings. You can choose to open just one or both of the doors, depending on the amount of ventilation you’d like to let into your home.
At Britannia, our French doors are always double. However, if you only have a single door frame we can create a glazed external door to your outside space that maximises on light entering your home even when it’s closed.
What’s the difference between patio doors and French doors?
French doors are designed using two doors that sit within one frame and can open either inwards or outwards. Patio doors, on the other hand, are sliding doors and consist of two sliding panels, depending on the space you have available.
Both are a great solution if you are wanting to create an entrance into your garden or outside space. French doors provide a larger, unobstructed space to walk through and increase the air circulation within your property. Patio doors are the better choice for those working with a smaller space, as they slide open and closed within their frame without protruding.
Do French doors swing in or out?
It’s completely up to you! Depending on what better suits your home and your lifestyle, you can decide to have your French doors to open inwards or outwards. Some people prefer them to open inwards, so as to not block a path outside or if there are shrubs in the way of them swinging fully outwards. Outward opening doors don’t take up any extra space inside and are the better choice if you’re working with a smaller space. You won’t have to worry about them getting caught in an unexpected gust of wind as our engineers have installed them with modern tension hinges to prevent them from slamming shut. If you’re unsure what method would better suit you, get in contact with an advisor today.
Why is it called a French door?
French doors originate in France and their design has strong Greek and Italian influences as well. During the Renaissance period, new styles of art and architecture were developed with light as its central theme. French doors enabled homeowners to let more light into their property, due to their large glass surface area. They became incredibly popular in France, commonly used as an entrance onto balconies which was great for the warmer climate. It wasn’t long before the style gained popularity in other parts of the world and now they are a classic and elegant door choice here in the UK.
Creating a seamless transition between your inner and outer space, they will make the perfect addition to your home. Choose from a variety of styles, colours and finishes so you can ensure your new French doors complement your property.
Do I need planning permission for French doors?
You don’t need planning permission to install French doors in your home, if you’re replacing doors in the same size opening or if you are making a larger opening for your French doors. However, this is only the case if you are installing French doors at the back of the property and not facing the road. You also need to be careful if you live in a listed building or in a protected area as there may be additional restrictions in place.
At M Powell, we are certified with CERTASS so we can make sure your new doors comply with building regulations approval. One less thing for you to worry about!
Do French doors increase home value?
French doors will increase the value of your property for a number of different reasons. They maximise on the amount of natural light that can enter into your home, as well as providing more control over your property’s ventilation. As the doors are almost entirely made of glass, they create unobstructed views of your surroundings. They are ideal for the summer months, as it gives your home more of an open-plan feel. It is also a great way to show off your garden and make it part of your home all year round.
To really add value with your French doors, you’ll need to ensure they are made from high quality materials and installed correctly. At M Powell, we do just that to ensure your French doors provide a beautiful addition to your home without having to compromise on its thermal efficiency or security.
