Double glazing is a great way to insulate your home, helping you reduce the amount you spend on your household bills. It is also a great way to reduce noise pollution if you live on a busy street or simply crave that extra peace and quiet, so your home remains a peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle outside.
Double glazing is expertly engineered to put a halt to excessive heat loss by having two separate panes of glass in one window frame with a gap between them. We fill this gap with argon gas, which is denser than air and works as a great insulator. It prevents the cold air outside from transferring to the inner pane, keeping you cosy all year round as the cold draughts are kept outside and your warm air in. This also significantly reduces condensation on the inside of your windows, an issue commonly found with single glazing.
All our double glazed windows come with excellent energy saving ratings and we also offer Super Energy Efficient glazing and triple glazing if you’re looking to take one step further in increasing the thermal efficiency of your home.
At M Powell, quality is an obsession. Is it worth replacing double glazing?
If you’ve noticed that your windows aren’t performing as they should, then it might be time to replace them. Double glazing tends to have a lifespan of around 20-30 years and as they get older they tend to become less energy efficient. The gas between the two panes can escape slowly over time which affects your windows performance. Your double glazing will be less insulative and you may find you can hear noise outside a lot clearer.
By upgrading your old windows with high-quality double glazing, you can wave goodbye to unwelcome draughts and the hustle and bustle outside if you live on a busy street. Our glass is always A-rated too so you will notice a reduction in your heating bill!
Does double glazing reduce condensation?
Absolutely! Double glazing is designed using two panes of glass with a gap inbetween that is filled with argon, a dense gas. This gas stops the cold temperatures transferring between the two panes of glass, so while the outside window pane may be icy cold, the inner one should be as warm and ambient as the temperature of your home.
In some cases you may see a build up of condensation on the outer pane. This is perfectly normal and will clear once the temperature rises outside your home.
Without the difference in temperature between the inside air and the cold window, you can wake up after a cold night’s sleep and open your curtains to find your windows condensation free! In some rooms, you may find you get a build up of condensation but this is due to a lack of heat in the room or inadequate ventilation.
What is double glazing?
Double glazing is different to single glazing as it is designed using two panes of glass as opposed to just one. These two panes are set apart to create a gap which we fill with argon, a gas denser than air. This gas makes it hard for heat and sound to travel between the two panes of glass, resulting in thermal insulation and a reduction in noise pollution.
Double glazing is a great home investment and can make a significant difference to the efficiency of your home. This will add value to your property and you’ll find your household bills will reduce.
What is the best gap for double glazing?
At Britannia, we’ve found that a 28mm thick unit with a 20mm gap between the two panes of glass is the best option for double glazing, and we offer this as standard. This gap insulates your home from noise and the cold as the dense argon gas stops it from travelling through the glass.
Our double glazing is highly energy efficient so you can save on your heating bills and help protect the environment.
Does double glazing reduce noise?
Yes! Double glazing is not just insulative, it helps to reduce noise pollution in your home too. The gap between the two panes of glass filled with dense gas argon, reduces the penetration of sound waves. If you live next to a busy road or crave peace and quiet, we offer laminated Stadip Silence windows which give you extra levels of sound proofing without the need for thick, heavy glass. Get in touch today if you’d like to find out more about noise insulation for your home.
How long does double glazing last?
It depends on a number of factors. Though if you properly care for your double glazed windows then they will last a lifetime. If you want to ensure they last for as long as possible, check that their window quality is A-rated for energy efficiency and that the installation is carried out by experts. If you find that you’re needing to reach for the thermostat during the winter months or the inner pane feels significantly cold to the touch, then your double glazing isn’t performing as it should.
