Are you looking to enhance your home, both from the inside and out? Bay and bow windows may be the perfect solution! Both stunning and classy, bay and bow windows will increase the amount of natural light in your home, as well as creating extra space for you and your family to enjoy.
Creating a beautiful new look that will add value for years to come, you can choose from an impressive range of colours and designs. Bay windows are the more traditional choice, often created in the shape of a trapezoid, with three straight angles. Depending on your personal preference, you can decide which sides you would like to be able to open and which can remain fixed.
Bow windows are a similar design, but instead of the windows being at angles to each other, they are installed to create a semicircle shape, oozing elegance.

How do you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?
Hanging curtains in a bay or bow window is slightly more complicated than a normal window, but if you choose the right fittings it can be fairly simple. For a three-section bay window, you can get specialised curtain rods that allow the curtain to be pulled all the way round; the curtain hooks have small gaps that allow them to pass through the curtain rod attachments. This means that you can cosy up in the evening and still enjoy your beautiful new addition to your home. You can also get bendable curtain rods that function better for arc-shaped bow windows.
Do bay or bow windows increase home value?
Absolutely! Installing bay or bow windows in your home can increase its value for a number of reasons. They will increase the amount of natural light flooding into your room and will create more space by adding extra square footage. This multifunctional space can be enjoyed by the whole family, whether that’s nestling down with a good book or a play area for the kids. They also give you a stunning 180-degree view of your outside space from your property. They may cost more to install than normal windows, but we think the benefits outweigh the costs with our bay and bow windows.
How many sides does a bay window have?
Traditionally, the bay window has three sides set away from the wall often in a trapezoid shape. This is formed by one window facing outwards and the other two at 45-degree angles to the wall. It is a popular style found in many late 19th and early 20th century houses in the UK.
You can also choose box bay windows, which form a rectangle shape away from the house, with the side windows at a 95-degree angle. This creates even more space inside, room enough for an armchair or a table to fit snugly without having to worry about the angled sides. At M Powell, we can do both – you decide what works best for you!
What is the difference between a bow and a bay window?
Both styles make a beautiful addition to any home! Bow and bay windows increase the amount of space and light in your property, but in two different ways. A classic bay window consists of three individual windows that meet at angles beyond the exterior of a wall. On the other hand, a bow window creates a graceful, smooth semicircle using an arrangement of four, six or more windows. Bow windows are often wider than bay windows to create that curved effect.

Do bay and bow windows open?
Bay and bow windows are designed to increase the amount of natural light in your home, as well as providing extra space. Bay windows are often simpler in design, with just three panels, and can all be opened or fixed depending on your personal preference. Bow windows are usually narrower to create that curved effect, so although they will be able to open, it may just be a few of the window panes rather than all of them.

What can I put in a bay window?
It’s up to you! If you install a bay window and want to make the most of the extra space, opt for adding a seating area that fits snugly in the space. Perfect for getting cosy with a good book or unwinding with a cup of tea, you could also use the additional space underneath for a bookshelf, or as a nook for your pet. If you don’t want to build anything, then push a couple of comfy armchairs into each corner, ideal for catching up with a friend over a coffee and cake!
